College football is here, finally, and with it comes the first of a weekly weekend preview.
North Texas @ Florida International (6 pm CST Thursday, 9/1 Watch on ESPN 3)
UNT looks to improve on an abysmal 3-9 season in 2010. They start the season off against a conference foe in FIU, a team that beat the Mean Green 34-10 just a year ago.
However, North Texas has a new coach, a new stadium and a new attitude. Hopefully that can get them on the track to winning more games.
Prediction: FIU-27, UNT-17
#14 TCU @ Baylor (7 pm CST Friday, 9/2, Televised on ESPN)
This rivalry has become more and more heated over the past several seasons. TCU has won the last three games by a combined 89-17 score, but Baylor is looking for some semblance of revenge this go around.
Baylor returns their dual-threat quarterback Robert Griffin III, considered a Heisman outsider in some circles this year. However he’s never been able to produce against a swarming TCU defense, one that this season returns several stellar players, including Tank Carder and Stansly Maponga.
Meanwhile the Baylor defense looks to be revitalized by the arrival of defensive coordinator Phil Bennett. However a lack of depth in the secondary could be exposed if receivers like Josh Boyce can get open.
Prediction: TCU-31, Baylor-17.
SMU @ #9 Texas A&M (6:30 pm CST, Sunday 9/4, Televised on Fox Sports Southwest)
SMU recently made public their desire to join the Big 12. What better way to prove your worth by beating the team that’s leaving? Hmmmm, on second though, it seems like Texas is afraid of any school that could compete with them (my thoughts as to why they’re looking at Rice, Houston and BYU as additions to the conference), so maybe it would be in the Mustangs’ favor to roll over and lose this game.
Regardless, they’ll have a tough time going into College Station and coming out with a win. The Aggies may be overrated in the eyes of a lot of people, but they’re still better than SMU.
Prediction: Texas A&M-42, SMU-24.
Other games to watch:
#3 Oregon vs. #4 LSU at Cowboys’ Stadium (7 pm CST, Saturday 9/3, Televised on ABC) Prediction: Oregon-27, LSU-24.
#5 Boise State @ #19 Georgia (7 pm CST, Saturday 9/3, Televised on ESPN) Prediction: Boise St.-42, Georgia-35.
#16 Notre Dame vs. South Florida (2:30 pm CST Saturday 9/3, Televised on NBC) Prediction: USF-30, Notre Dame-17.
